STUDENT LIFE at RAU
Travelling to RAU
RAU is situated in the bigger downtown, just 10 minutes away from the very center of Yerevan. This area is well served by the public transport system. The University is located up on the hill and due to its location the surrounding area is very chill, mostly with residential houses and far from the downtown’s hustle and bustle. Students can easily find their way to the University.
Despite the fact that RAU does not have its own dormitory yet, international students can be provided with both accommodation and advice. RAU provides accommodation at the AGBU Vahe Karapetian Center for the exchange students in a fully equipped and renovated, while at the same time low-cost student dormitory. If the students are not willing to live in dormitory, there is a common practice of renting and sharing apartments. There are many available for rent in the University area and finding a roommate is not a matter of concern for there have always been lots of students from abroad who are willing to share an apartment. The cost of the apartments for rent vary depending on the district – the closer to the downtown the more expensive they are, but it is possible to find an apartment close both to university and to downtown with approximately 90 - 100 EUR per month for one person.
Life in Yerevan
Yerevan is one of the most convenient cities to live and study in. The city itself is not very big, but the student community of Yerevan is quite a big one. Many young men come to Yerevan from other regions of Armenia as well as from the countries of the region and Russia to study. Consequently the student life is active both in terms of academic part (there are many operating public libraries, numerous student conferences are organized by various student organizations and initiatives) and fun part (Yerevan is famous for its robust night life with countless bars, pubs and clubs).
Extracurricular activities in RAU
There is Student Council in RAU that is independent, self-organized body with its own structure within the University. Student Council of RAU is responsible for a wide range of issues connected to the students. For it is self organized body, all students are able to participate in its activities and make their own contributions and suggestions. Organization of various events like blood donation initiative, collection of necessary goods, products and other resources for orphans, student parties, concerts and other similar events are organized by the Student Council. Students of RAU also have opportunity to self organize and open clubs or communities based on mutual interests and hobbies. Thus currently there are several such clubs for instance Photo Club where students voluntarily gather at the University and share their knowledge of photography art; Political Club where students organize panel discussions and debates; Movie Club where students organize weekly movie screenings followed by discussions and welcome leading directors and artists; Dancing Club and other similar clubs. As a rule many students become involved in Student Council activities from the very first grade and make their ideas come true with the help of all the resources that are available for Student Council.
Student Scientific Organization is another self organized body within the University. Student Scientific Organization deals mostly with academic part of student life and organizes conferences, discussions, academic reports and other activities that are connected to the scientific and academic life of the University. Annual Scientific Conference is a vital part of the University and those students who are willing to participate in this annual event are free to do so by preparing reports and other academic works. This annual scientific conference is a good starting point of academic career for all the students for the presented works are included in annual publications of this conference.
The University has all the necessary fully equipped laboratories for the departments of Applied mathematics and Informatics, Bio Engineering and Bioinformatics, Pharmacy, Electronics and Nanoelectronics. There are also several IT laboratories available for the students.
All RAU students have access to the Internet via WiFi that is available in the whole area of the University. The access is free of charge for all the students.
RAU has its own Theatre, which is jointly run by the university students and teachers. RAU Theatre organizes its own admissions twice or once per academic year. Successful students engage in Theatre activities, which give performances not only in the University itself but also in other Theatres of Yerevan. RAU Theatre also tours to most famous Russian Theatres and has for many times become the first place award winner of University Theatre Competitions both in Armenia and Russia. Leading theatre experts and artists are frequent guests in RAU Theatre and give workshops for those involved in the Theatre. RAU Theatre has its own unique place in University life, giving chances of self-expression through arts.
Voice of RAU is annual competition between RAU students. Those students who have singing talents and want to show them to their friends are welcomed to participate in Voice of RAU. All the concerts are held in the Cultural Center of RAU, which has the capacity of hosting more than 500 people and is fully equipped according to highest standards of concert halls. Students are free to use this Cultural Center as a resource any time.
In 2009 RAU opened its own Sports Complex, which quickly boosted sports activities of our students, making RAU the most active University in terms of the level of engagement of students in various sports activities. There are tennis courts, basketball volleyball and football pitches, gym, boxing and ping pong arenas. Each department has its own football clubs and University Football Championships are organized annually. Besides the above mentioned Championship there is RAU Football Team which has for many times become the Champion of the Armenian Inter-University Championships. There are also Women’s and Men’s Teams of Basketball and Volleyball. All the clubs and teams have annual admissions for all the students.
The library in RAU is constantly being replenished with modern scientific, fiction and non-fiction literature. The library has the best collection of Russian scientific periodical publications in Armenia; it is equipped with electronic database and catalogues, all the students can get necessary materials from the library.
There’s a flexible scholarship system in RAU and those students who success in their scientific and educational activities have a chance to get RF Presidential Scholarship, RA President Award for IT, RF Governmental Scholarship, Yerevan Mayor Scholarship, Moscow Mayor Scholarship, Academic Mkrtchyan Scholarship etc. The University provides assistance to its students who are participating in international conferences and sends them to such conferences itself.
