On March 18 in the library of Russian-Armenian University’s new corpus a commemorative event took place, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of prominent scientist and public figure, Academician of NAS RA Sergey Hambardzumyan. Within the framework of the evening the ceremony of attribution of the name of Sergey Hambardzumyan to the library of RAU took place, opening of the personal exhibition of Academician Hambardzumyan’s paintings, as well as presentation of the book “The proud Armenian of the XXI century”.

 

“Sergey Hambardzumyan was not “a friend” with sentiments, he had quite a pragmatic attitude to life and death. I believe that this library is not about memories rather than about science, progress, future, and country development. It is very symbolic that we hold this ceremony in the new corpus of our university that we projected during Sergey Alexandrovich's lifetime: he participated in the first discussions, connected to the construction of the building. This is a great honor and grand event to us. Wonderful thoughts and scientific ideas should be born in the library after Academician Hambardzumyan, as he was an amazing person”, noted the Rector of RAU, Professor Armen Darbinyan.

 

In his turn, the Vice rector of Russian-Armenian University, the Head of the Institute of Humanitarian Sciences of RAU, the author of the book “The proud Armenian of the XXI century”, a longtime friend and associate of the Academician Hambardzumyan, Gagik Sarkisyan shared his memories, connected to the life of the outstanding scientist.

 

"Different structures of our university could be named after Sergey Hambardzumyan, but there is a special symbolic meaning in naming the library of the RAU after Academician Hambardzumyan. I saw what powerful work he had done as the rector of Yerevan State University. In those years, he opened many new directions. Thanks to his great efforts, a library appeared at YSU. Opening the library was a very important task for him.  If there is a university - there is a library, if there is a library - there is a university", Gagik Sarkisyan assured.

 

Speaking about the book "Proud Armenian of the XXI century", Gagik Sarkisyan stressed that it was written during the lifetime of Academician Hambardzumyan.

 

It should also be noted that Sergey Hambardzumyan was the chief scientific consultant of RAU in the period from 2002 to 2018.
