Professor Jost Gippert Delivers Lecture at RAU on Caucasian Albanian Manuscripts

During the lecture, Gippert discussed the ongoing decipherment of these manuscripts, which include biblical translations and liturgical texts in the Caucasian Albanian language.

Renowned German scholar Professor Jost Gippert delivered a lecture titled “Caucasian Albania: Working with Manuscripts” at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian-Armenian University on June 10.

Professor Gippert has played a key role in the study of the Caucasian Albanian Sinai palimpsests discovered at Saint Catherine’s Monastery on Mount Sinai. These manuscripts, considered one of the most important discoveries related to the cultural heritage of Caucasian Albania, contain erased original texts that can now be recovered using modern technologies.

During the lecture, Gippert discussed the ongoing decipherment of these manuscripts, which include biblical translations and liturgical texts in the Caucasian Albanian language. He highlighted the use of advanced research methods and digital technologies that make previously unreadable texts accessible.

The event attracted strong interest from scholars of Oriental studies, philology, religious studies, history, and archaeology. It was organized within the framework of the research project “Transformation of the Identities of Indigenous Peoples of the Caucasus-Caspian Region,” led by Professor Garnik Asatrian and supported by Armenia’s Science Committee.
